Regularly changing your car’s oil is important for maintaining the health and longevity of its engine. To help you with this essential task, our expert team at Burt Watson Chevrolet in Freedland, MI has taken the time to compile a step-by-step tutorial on how to change your oil. Read on to learn more!
- Gather Necessary Supplies: Before changing your oil, make sure that you have all of the required tools. These include: a new oil filter, engine oil, an oil drain pan, a socket wrench set, an oil filter wrench, and a funnel.
- Get Your Car Ready: Make sure that your car is ready for an oil change. First, put your vehicle in park and wait a few moments to ensure that the engine is cooled down. Then, lift the hood of your car and locate the oil filler cap and dipstick.
- Drain the Oil: To drain your engine oil, you’ll want to place the oil drain pan underneath the oil pan drain plug. Then, use a socket wrench to remove the plug, and allow the old to drain onto the pan. Finally, when the oil is drained, clean the plug and reinstall it.
- Replace Your Oil Filter: Replacing your oil filter is an important step in changing your oil. First, locate the oil filter near the bottom of your engine. Then, use your oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter. Before you install your new filter, be sure to apply a layer of clean oil on the rubber gasket of your filter. Finally, screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until it feels tight.
- Add New Oil: At this point, you can now add your new oil! Do this buy removing the oil filter cap from the top of your engine, inserting a funnel into the oil filler hole, and slowly and carefully pouring the new oil into your engine.
